Founded in 1993, the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) is a non-profit trade organization that promotes sustainable design in building design, construction and operation. The USGBC has developed the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating system and Greenbuild, a green building conference that promotes the green building industry including environmentally responsible building materials, sustainable building and architectural techniques and public policy.
The USGBC has more than 15,000 member organizations including SOPREMA.
SOPREMA also participates in Greenbuild each year.
The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating system was conceived in 1994 by the Natural Resources Defense Council that led a broad based consensus process which included non-profit organizations, governmental agencies, architects, engineers, developers, builders, product manufacturers and other industry leaders.
The USGBC establishes benchmarks for the LEED Green Building Rating System which is a framework for accessing a buildings performance and its ability in meeting sustainability goals.
There are four catagories of LEED certification (based on a 100 point scale):
Certified: 40-49 points
Silver: 50-59 points
Gold: 60-70 points
Platinum: 80+ points
